中國的鼠尾草屬 (Salvia)植物種類約有100種，其中有30種作為傳統中藥材使用(Liu et al., 2007)。在中國早期藥材來源多為野生，今則以栽培為主，以四川產量最大，故市售品稱為川丹參，其它的重要產區為遼寧、河北、河南、山東、山西、湖北、江西、江蘇、浙江、陜西、甘肅、西藏、雲南、貴州、廣西等地區，在不同栽培地區、肥料施用量、種植方式、栽培時期、收穫時期、連作或輪作栽培制度、病蟲害等因素，各產區之間的產量與品質有極大的差異。

市售常見的丹參種類有南丹參(S. bowleyana Dunn)、擬丹參（皖鄂丹參）(S. paramiltiorrhiza H. W. Li et X. L. Huang)、滇丹參（雲南丹參）(S. yunnanensis C. H. Wright)、白花丹參(S. miltiorrhiza Bunge var. miltiorrhiza f. alba C. Y. Wu et H. W. Li)等種類，在臺灣及中國藥典中僅收載丹參（S. miltiorrhiza Bunge）為正確的丹參基原植物。
