This is a systematic study of the penaied shrimps of Taiwan based on specimens collected from 1972 to 1975. Except the work of Maki and Tsuchiya (1923), Chang (1955) , Liao and Chen (1970 and 1972) , no systematic study on the penaeid shrimps of Taiwan has been published. For this reason, considerable difficulties have been encountered in research work on the culture , technology , resources investigation , etc. of the shrimps due to confusion of the native names and scientific names among the fishermen , consumers and research personnel. The authors hope this study would remedy the situation , and , together with the work of Kubo (1949) , Dall (1957) , Hall (1962) etc. , it would enable people to understand more clearly the classification and distribution of the penaeid shrimps of the Indo-Pacific region.
