Plant breeders usually work ten years or longer to develop an outstanding new crop variety. This new variety is thus the end production of years of painstaking efforts of many agricultural workers. But, this new variety with all its superior plant characters will not automatically maintain the way it was developed. It may get badly mixed with weeds, other crops or other varieties of the same crop and then lost its own identity. Or it may cross-pollinated with other kinds of crops or other varieties and become genetically different from the original variety the breeders developed through years of hard work. In time, it might not even look like the new variety released only a few years ago.
