Rice is the staple food for the entire populace of Taiwan. Terraces and sman pieces of paddy fields can be seen almost everywhere on the Island. In 1964, the total cnltivated rice acreage was 764,935 ha. with a gross output of 2,246,639 M. T. of brown rice, marking the highest record in the history of rice production in Taiwan.
