In vie w of the limited arable land and an over-crowded and rapidly growing population, one of the basic agricultural policies of Taiwan is to raise the unit crop yield as much as possible. Technical improvements of various nature are being made to raise the individual crop yield, and special crop rotation systems have also been adopted for growing three or four crops a year on the same tract of land. The planting of winter crops, following the second rice crop, has been widely practiced in central and southern Taiwan, and is now rapidly spreading to all parts of the Island.
