With the steady increase of population in Taiwan, disposal of organic wastes including nightsoil and refuse2 have become problems more and more annoying to local government agencies and menacing to the sanitation and public health of urban residents. The solution of these problems has been a challenge both to the sanitarians and agriculturists on this island, and, incidentally, considerable improvement has already been attained through the nightsoil disposal improvement projects sponsored by provincial and local agencies in recent years. However, not so much has been done to meet the problems relevant to the effective disposal and utilization of urban and village refuse for agricultural purposes.
