Agriculture is an integral link in the overall national economy, and provides multi-functional values closely connected to the daily lives of citizens, including such areas as stabilizing the supply of staple foods, conserving the natural environment, ensuring food safety, and sustaining rural culture. Today agriculture faces numerous challenges that include worsening climate change and trade liberalization. The Council of Agriculture, in accord with the policy platform of the new presidential administration, will “pursue a new economic model for sustainable development based on the core values of innovation, employment and equitable distribution.” We will construct a new agriculture, one that maintains strong foundations but also shows innovation and reform. The COA has in fact already proposed the “New Agriculture Innovation Promotion Program,” which seeks new agricultural models that ensure sustainable development. It is hoped that through the three main axes of (i) constructing agricultural models, (ii) building an agricultural safety system, and (iii) upgrading marketing capabilities for agriproducts, our policies will lead to innovation in, and strengthening of, the structure and value of agriculture in Taiwan, and allow Taiwan agriculture to sell its products to the entire globe.
