NUTRITIONAL EVALUATION OF MEAT AND BONE MEAL AND OIL FROM RENDERING PLANT IN TAIWAN

INTRODUCTION
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Recently, the price of feed ingredients is higher and higher, therefore looking for the substitution to reduce the cost has become an important issue. The meat and bone meal and rendering oil which from rendering plants have rich protein, oil and mineral can be sources as feed ingredients and reduce the cost.In Taiwan, the process of rendering was collecting died animal body, the wastes from the slaughter house and unqualified carcass as the material of rendering have been cooked through high temperature and pressure, then separated oil form it. The residues were dried and crashed become into the meal and bone meal. Taiwan is not OIE bulletin infected area of BES, hence died animal babies have not been restricted to rendered. The meat and bone production have be approached to 117 thousand tons in 2009. However the nutritional value in the meat- and bone meal and rendering oil from different sources has not been evaluated. This study analyzes the nutrient of meat and bone meal and rendering oil which collected from 5 rendering plants which the production were approached 95% of total production in Taiwan.
METHODS AND MATERIAL
◆Sample collection:
The samples of meat and bone meal and rendering oil were collected from 5 rendering plants during October to December in 2007. Five times of each plants was sampled according AOAC(1990) and storage in -20℃until analysis.
◆Assays and analysis
Measurement in meat and bone meal
Each sample of meat and bone meal was determined the proximate analysis (moisture, crude protein, ethanol extract, crude fiber and ash), digestible protein and the contents of amino acid. The methods of proximate analysis and digestible protein were followed AOAC (1990). After hydrolysed, quantitative and qualitative amino acid analysis (AAA) of meat and bone meal samples were obtained with the Beckman 6300 high performance analyzer using System Gold software.
Measurement in rendering oil
The samples of rendering oil were determined gross energy, 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values and acid value. The gross energy and acid value of rendering oils were determined according the methods of AOAC (1990). The measurement of TBA was according the description of Yamazaki (1967).
◆Meat and bone meal
Proximate analysis
The results of proximate analysis showed the meat and bone meal contained moisture 5.59-7.97%, ash 16.4-19.7%, crude protein 50-66%, crude fat 9.26-15.43%, crude fiber 1.09-8.98% and 4406-4658 kcal/kg of gross energy.
Digestible protein and amine acid
The meat and bone meal contained 39.4-58.2% of digestible protein, those amine acid including methionine 0.703-1.170%, lysine 2.25-4.05%, cystine 0.283-0.570%, and threonine 1.68-2.32%.
Minerals content
The minerals content of meat and bone meal were calcium 5.33-7.07%, phosphorus 2.35-3.1% and chromium 0.23-1.14 ppm.
The variation of nutritional value in the meat- and bone meal resulted from the difference of the raw material source, rendering process and conditions, and the kinds of supplemental plant among five rendering plants.
◆Rendering oil
The analysis of rendering oil showed 9175-9447 kcal/kg of gross energy, and 0.2-3.6 of 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values, and 5.52-9.68 mg/KOH of acid values.
The primary variation was caused by the quality of raw material source. The raw materials from slaughterhouse were 3 not corrupter than the raw materials from farms. Therefore the rendered oil got difference TBA value. According to Chinese National Standards the acid value of peanut oil for human intake is less than 2. It also should be considered while take the oil as an energy source in animal feed.
