The year 2023 was extraordinarily meaningful for the agricultural sector in Taiwan. It had been 35 years since the call by protesting farmers to "establish a Ministry of Agriculture" in the May 20 farmers' movement of 1988, and with the commitment and support of various sectors of society, the "Organization Act of the Ministry of Agriculture" was finally enacted in May of 2023. As of August, the former Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan became the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA). Not only did this step finally fulfill the longheld hopes of farmers and fishermen, it also demonstrated how seriously the government considers agricultural development to be. It highlights the determination to protect farmers and fishermen, create a resilient agricultural sector, and guide the sound and sustainable development of agriculture in Taiwan.
