Development of Flower Induction Technology of Nobile-type Dendrobium
Abstract
Taiwan has the reputation of ‘A Orchid Kingdom’. In order to expand the market, it is necessary to develop new and potential orchids besides phalaenopsis. Because of the elegant flower types, fragrance and diversity, the nobile-type dendrobium is a good choice among many different types of orchids. In Taiwan, blooming period of nobile-type dendrobium is from March to May, which just misses the peak demand of Lunar New Year. Meanwhile, there are also several problems of blooming, like unstable quality, ununiform flowering and a smaller number of flowers. The research was conducted to determine the effects of artificial chemicals with appropriate temperature on inducing flowers of Den. Lai's Lovely Momo which is bred in Taiwan. This technique could promote floral buds’ formation efficiently, and could increase flowering rate to 100% even though the temperature was generally considered not low enough for vernalization for nobile-type dendrobium. The higher concentration of the chemical, the more flowers would be, but the diameters of flowers would decrease. When the chemical was treated during vernalization, the total number of flowers was increased up to 21 and number of flowers per node was up to 4.4. Meanwhile, it did not affect the number of flowering nodes , buds aborted and life of flowers. However, improper treatments caused malformed flowers and flower abortion. Maturity of plants and treatment conditions also affected the quality of flowering. Thus, treating at appropriate plant maturity, modified concentration and suitable temperature could be applied to production regulations of dendrobium pot flowers and promote competition of Taiwan’s dendrobium. For the extended technology from this research could be non-exclusive transferred from TSIPS, some information should be kept confidential.
