AALSMEER, Netherlands: Building on last year’s success, the 2nd ROOOZ festival was held from June 17-21 and featured competition roses, amazing new varieties, a B2B Open House, dazzling floral arrangements, displays of heritage roses and a grand rose show open to the public during the weekend.
The ROOOZ Trophy 2015 Award has gone to Preesman’s Rosa ‘Shairy’ The inaugural ROOOZ show took place last year at the Historical Garden Aalsmeer, a garden which provides an excellent overview of the development of Aalsmeer from 1600 until 1940.
The museum was delighted to be also the venue for this year’s ROOOZ. The choice for the Historical Garden Aalsmeer is only natural as it hosts an impressive collection of historic roses which perfectly matched with a sumptuous display of over 300 new rose varieties from no fewer than 12 leading rose breeders. The new five-day rose festival has been created through the co-operation of three individual rose growers from the Netherlands including Zuurbier International, VP Group, and RosaPlaza/AQ Roses.
They all share the common goal of becoming increasingly involved at all levels of the supply chain. In his welcome address for the opening of the 2015 ROOOZ show on Wednesday June 17th, co-organiser Frank Ammerlaan outlined what the event means to him and his company, RosaPlaza/AQ Roses, a 40ha rose farm in Ziway, Ethiopia. He recognized not only the need for promoting roses among industry professionals and consumers, but also saw the need to improve supply chain performance in the Dutch rose industry.
“Unfortunately, there is still a lot of inaccuracy and miscommunication between supply chain partners. We should focus more on collaborative demand and replenishment planning. At grower’s level it is too often unclear what the customer is really demanding.” Ammerlaan sees ROOOZ as an excellent platform to get to know the industry’s customers better. He mentioned the business-to-business open house on June 17, 18 and 19. Attending were representatives from local floral wholesale businesses, florists and auction staff who stopped by for wine, appetizers and an overall introduction to today’s commercial cut rose portfolio.
Celebrating the rose’s past, presence and future, ROOOZ hosted the Most Promising Rose competition. Rose breeders presented two of their best cultivars in the Intermediate as well as T-Hybrid categories. The overall goal was to determine which roses appeal the most to both industry professionals and public. The top 30 flower buyers, mainly focused on wholesale business, voted on Wednesday (invites only), while consumers voted for their favourite rose over the weekend. The ROOOZ Trophy 2015 Award has gone to Preesman’s Rosa ‘Shairy’ while industry professionals voted Rosa ‘Shairy’ and ‘Myllena’ Best in Show in the Medium Rose category and large headed category respectively. Rosa ’Bengali’ from Kordes Rozen and Rosa ‘Afterparty+’ from Dümmen Orange won the Visitor’s Vote in respectively the medium and large headed categories.
